HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY THE INSTITUTE FOR GRADUATE STUDIES IN SCIENCE and ENGINEERING General Information The Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering started its education in July 8, 1967 within the body of the Science, Engineering and Social Sciences Faculty, and later transformed into the Faculty of Graduate Studies in July 1, 1974. The Act No-2547 invalidated the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and the institute continued to serve in conformity with the new Turkish University system realized by the Higher Educational Council and received the name of the "Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering" in 1982. · Qualification awarded The Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering gives M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in following 20 Departments.
● REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO GRADUATE PROGRAMS To become a Hacettepe University the Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering graduate student, the applicant must be admitted to Hacettepe University through both the office of admissions of the Institute and the relevant department. The Institute examines the material submitted to determine adequacy of academic background and whether the general university conditions for admission have been met and processes and evaluates graduate applications according to admission standards set by the University Senate. All applications should be made personally; mail or other forms of applications will not be considered. International students must have completed the equivalent of Turkish B.Sc and M.Sc. degrees respectively. Date of Application: The prospective students should submit their applications to the Registrar's Office of the Institute within the dates specified in the Academic Calendar. Application Fee: For 2005-2006 Academic Year 120 New Turkish Liras to be deposited to the bank account (announced at the web page of the Institute) of the University as the non-refundable application fee. Tuition: 2005-2006 Academic Year international student’s tuition and fees (Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering) are set as the equivalent of 5000 USD by the University Senate. This amount does not cover other expenses such as room and board, incidentals, books, insurance. Required Documents: 1. Official transcripts (grade slips, web printable transcripts or reports will not be accepted for use in evaluation) of previous academic work, undergraduate and graduate. International applicants must provide a certified English or Turkish translation of their academic transcripts. 2. The notary certified copy of the B.Sc. diploma (For Ph.D. applicants, the M.Sc. diploma). 3. A minimum score of 50 from LES, administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) of Turkey. OSYM administers the LES exam twice a year, in May and in December. Alternatively, the Institute also accepts scores obtained from Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Quantitative section of GRE should have minimum score of 648 for both M.Sc. and PhD applications. 4. Language Proficiency test is required either in English or French or German. Accepted language proficiency tests are: KPDS or UDS English-French-German Proficiency Tests (administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center, OSYM of Turkey) Min. Score: M.Sc.: 60; Ph.D.: 75 TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Computer based min. Score: M.Sc.: 187; Ph.D.: 213 IELTS Test (International English Language Testing System) Min. Score: M.Sc.: 6.5; Ph.D.: 7.5 For other accepted Turkish (valid for the international applicants only), French or German language proficiency tests, please consult with the institute. 5. Two reference letters from professors/lecturers familiar with the applicant’s academic performance. 6. Statement of purpose letter (This only applies to applicants for Ph.D.). 7. ID photocopy issued by the home country officials of the applicant. 8. A recent passport size photograph of the applicant (without hat, headscarves, beard, glasses and similar). 9. An official document indicating the applicant's disciplinary record at the university from which he or she has graduated (This only applies to applicants who have studied in Turkish universities). · Educational and professional goals The Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering at Hacettepe University will contribute to the creation and discovery of knowledge and other forms of scholarship by facilitating graduate student scholarly activities, providing leadership in defining excellence in the graduate experience, promoting an environment that nurtures exploring and learning, and advocating the benefits of the graduate enterprise on a local, European and global level. · Access to further studies Due to the very nature of the Hacettepe University Institute for Science and Engineering, the institute is focused on M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies. However admission as a “Special Student” on a course basis is possible. Special studentship is a form of further education with center of attention on working life, not resulting in a degree. The applicant’s academic background must be of a standard suitable for the courses he/she is to attend at the institute. · Examination and Assessment Regulations Oral examination, essay questions, seminar presentation and oral defense examination.of M.Sc and Ph.D thesis · Grading System 90-100: A1 85-89 : A2 75-84 : B1 70-74 : B2 65-69 : C1 60-64 : C2 55-59 : D1 50-54 : D2 0 - 49: F3 G : Successful in courses without credits K : Failed in courses without credits F1: Failed because of absenteeism, does not have the right to enter the final exam F3: Failed in final examination H : Has legitimate excuse A student who has received A1, A2, B1, and G grades is considered successful from that course. B2 and C1 are conditionally pass grades. * A student who has received C2, D1, D2, F2 and K has also failed.
